Brian Gossett’s mixes are regularly being played over the speakers up here in the Seattle office for quite some time so I wanted to take this opportunity to post one. To introduce this mix let me just say that it is a fairly dour and chilly compilation intended to capture the essence of the months of November and December. The artwork—always nicely done—is a clear reflection of the music.

This mix was contributed to The Mixtape Club which invites artists, musicians, and all around music lovers to make 10 song mixes. The mixes live on their website for about a month so be sure to catch them.

I have been playing around with a handful of social integration utilities for Wordpress and so far the Simple Twitter/Facebook Connect plugins from Otto are by far the easiest, most feature useful and stable that I have found.

You will see that this post was simply, and easily posted to our FB Fan Page – http://www.facebook.com/BKWLD and tweeted (http://twitter.com/BKWLD)

The plugins have some really fun features – like automagically grabbing any “@” handles and linking them back to twitter – @BKWLD

Do you guys have any other favorite Wordpress plugins or add ons you find endlessly useful?

This morning I was watching a video about an application for the digital version of Wired magazine for tablet computers. This app is the result of a partnership between Wired and Adobe to make a compelling counterpart to traditional print magazines.

One of the things I truly enjoy about Wired is the strong, distinct designs employed for the various sections and articles in the magazine and it looks like the tablet version does an excellent job of preserving these qualities in the digital realm. And yet I couldn’t help feeling underwhelmed by what was demoed in the video. Everything is wrapped in a slick presentation but I’m not seeing anything and there is some interactivity but it just ends up feeling like a website living in a print layout.

Steve Jobs described the iPad as a magical device but we’ve yet to see anything really magical achieved with it (yes, I realize it’s not available for sale just yet). Running with the magical theme one thing a tablet version of magazine could do that a print version could not is a moving photo/video cover ala the newspapers in Harry Potter. Esquire recently had an augmented reality issue, something like this could be the norm for digital magazines.

My examples aren’t really anything new either — they’ve both been thought up and/or executed already. The iPad and it’s tablet brethren represent a new take on computing and the computer, I’d like to see the apps developed for them offer a fresh perspective and experience as well.

The SEA office flew down to Sacramento before the holidays to meet in person as a group, plan the next year, and have fun together over 4 days. My shoulder was (and is) out of commission (bike accident) so I missed this years ski trip to Tahoe; it sounded like everyone got along fine without me though. Going up to Tahoe is sort of a BKWLD tradition at this point, I think this was the 4th or 5th time. Of all the photos I took, these came out the least blurry, which is pretty sad. If someone with more skills and a better camera has some shots, please replace mine in this post!

Happy New Year everyone, looking forward to an amazing 2010!

Seems every Tom, Dick and Harry these days is talking about and hawking their Twitter. I’m trying to figure out when I started Tweeting – searched my email and found a message from Eddie, dated March 11th, 2007 simply saying “http://twitter.com”.

I’m thinking then I’ve been tweeting for over two years, and to say the technology, support and people using it has changed drastically is an understatement, but I’ve been using it the exact same way from day one. Here’s an example of both of these concepts. I used the site http://myfirsttweet.com to find my very first tweet (there’s a friggin’ cottage industry of these kinds of site):

danthebeast: Breaking this twitter cherry like so many sunflower seeds. 2007-04-12 22:38:00

I now remember at the time I was eating quite a few sunflower seeds, and in typical fashion for me, I was a little ‘blue’ in my content. I’m not sure what it is about Twitter, but I always feel inclined to either take my tweets “to the next level” as I’m sometimes accused of in the office when it comes to water cooler talk, or I am very negative and pessimistic. Both are part of my cheery nature, and it’s easy to manifest itself in 140 characters.

Nevertheless, I knew Twitter had hit a tipping point the moment it became used for marketing. All of my favorite Tweeters have started to use the site less and less, almost as if their favorite indie band had just struck it big, and now the very fan base that helped grow it, is turning on it. Sell out!

Josh said yesterday he thought Twitter was dead – and that I would stop tweeting. The thing is, I’ve always only thought of Twitter as a way for me to share dirty and silly inside jokes, inane observations and arrogant self introspections with my colleagues and wife. In fact, when my wife Nicole tells me one of my Tweets made her laugh, I count that as a “win”, and use that as ammo for why I won’t stop Tweeting. She’s basically giving me a verbal “RT”. And if in the process other colleagues and friends start to follow me, that’s just icing.

I don’t Tweet to win new business for BKWLD, and I don’t Tweet to sell anything. And the people that do, it’s blatantly obvious.

The point of this meandering post is just to say, if you Tweet, don’t forget why you got into it. If you use your personal Facebook page as a way to network your business, you’re missing the point. Use Linked In. You’re basically the equivalent of the friend who always asks friends to Pampered Chef parties at your house, or is always pushing Mary Kay or another product. Trust me, your friends hate it, and avoid you for asking them about this stuff constantly.

And if you are using Twitter to push your business, you better be coming with some super inside (and fun) info or some great deals. Your website has a press room or news section and RSS feed for that sort of thing. Twitter, is not that vehicle. I recommend the following website as a primer for your business:

The new Kanye West album is getting a lot of air play at the Sacto BKWLD studio. I think it’s appropriate everyone revisit this alternate version of the Can’t Tell Me Nothing video.

The beauty of this video is that the majority of Kanye West aficionados may not be aware that the video’s supporting actor (yes, the creepy bald guy with the mustache) is one of the most respected song writers of the last fifteen years. To those of us who have danced our first dances as man and wife, birthed our children into the world, and paid last respects to friends leaving it to his music, this video is quite surreal.

Here’s some more Will Oldham for your would-be rainy day enjoyment:
